The Shanghai style qipao was formed in the 1930s, when people began to wear a western jacket, overcoat or sweater over a qipao. At that time, designs like western dress turndown collar, V-neck, ruffle collar, ruffle sleeves and slit-sleeves were introduced to qipao making. Later, there appeared revolutionized qipao with bust darts, waist darts, inset sleeves and shoulder slits, with some having shoulder pads to bring out the nice figure. Thanks to the large amount of textile products imported from abroad, there are plenty to choose from for qipao making, such as all kinds of satin, silk, cotton, woolen cloth and gauze, etc. |
