The Bouyei are the indigenous residents living in southeast Yunnan and Guizhou Plateau. As early as the Stone Age, they were living and working there. Sharing the same origin with the Zhuang, the Bouyei is a branch of the ancient Baiyue ethnic group. By now, they still keep some customs and habits of the ancient Baiyue group. The Bouyei has a splendid culture and various art forms, among which the "Eight Treasures" are the most distinctive. They are: Bouyei Eight Instruments, Bouyei-drama, Bouyei "Xiaoxiaoguan" (a kind of zarzuela), Bouyei Music in Dribs and Drabs, Bouyei Bronze Drum, Bouyei Mojing Culture, Bouyei Nuo Rite and Bouyei Mime, a pre-Nuo ceremonial drama.
